WSU offers new online major in accounting

PULLMAN – Beginning this summer, WSU is offering a new online major in accounting.

The College of Business worked with Distance Degree Programs to put the major online, creating the third new online business program in the last few months.

WSU’s accounting undergraduate major is one of only 165 AACSB-accredited accounting baccalaureate programs worldwide, said John Sweeney, chair of the Department of Accounting and Ted Saldin Distinguished Professor of Accounting. “Offering the accounting major online will provide access for a large segment of the population who are unable to take courses at a campus location,” he said. “It is a tremendous opportunity for students to join a dynamic and prestigious profession.”

Janet Kendall, director of academic programs at DDP, said many students have asked for an online accounting major. “We expect a lot of interest,” she said.

The other two recent additions to online business programs are an undergraduate major in international business, and an Online MBA (omba.wsu.edu).  Those programs joined three other online business majors: management information systems, entrepreneurship, and management and operations. Additionally, WSU launched an Executive MBA program (emba.wsu.edu) last fall, which is taught partly online and partly at the Spokane campus.

The accounting major comes at an opportune time for job-seekers. U.S. Department of Labor forecasts a “faster-than-average growth of accountant and auditor jobs” in coming years, due to changing financial laws, and greater scrutiny of company finances.

Information on the new accounting major is at online.wsu.edu/future_students/dc_accounting.aspx. Information on other online undergraduate degrees is at online.wsu.edu.
