500 calorie meals debut on campus

PULLMAN – In an effort to support WSU’s commitment to Wellbeing, Dining Services will debut their new 500 Calorie Meal at Carlita’s Mexican Grille and Espresso in the CUB and at Northside Café in Regents Residence Hall this week. 

Two 500 Calorie Meal options are available at Carlita’s beginning today:  the Southwest Chicken Salad for $4.99 and the Santa Fe Rice Bowl for $5.65.  Carlita’s also features Refried Beans, Black Beans, and Mexican Rice as Healthy Options side dishes.

Northside Café will serve the 500 Calorie Meal beginning Tuesday this week.  The first meal is Balsamic Orange Chicken with Wild Rice and Steamed Zucchini.  The menu for the rest of the week includes Lemon Herb Cod with Brown Rice and Steamed Vegetables, Barbeque Chicken with Steamed Red Potatoes and Steamed Corn, and Tortilla-Encrusted Tilapia with Brown Rice and Steamed Green Beans.

Hillside Café and Southside Café will begin serving the 500 Calorie Meals on Monday, January 19.  The same 500 Calorie Meal will be available at each of the dining centers (Hillside Café, Northside Café, and Southside Café) during lunchtime (11:00am – 2:00pm) Monday through Friday.   The 500 Calorie Meals at thedining centers  will feature a protein-rich entrée, a low-fat grain or starch, and a nutrient-dense vegetable.  

“The Chefs and I are working diligently to create an upscale and exotic menu for the 500 Calorie Meals,” said Shawn Hoch, Dining Services Associate Director of Culinary. 

All 500 Calorie Meals contain less than 500 calories with less than 30 percent calories from fat, less than 10 percent calories from saturated fat, and less than 1000mg of sodium.
