WSU slows hiring: President prepares for uncertain economy

Staff job openings will be held vacant and new academic programs, degrees and courses won’t be added as WSU responds to a request from President Elson S. Floyd to prepare for economic uncertainty in the coming fiscal year.
 
Except for emergency/essential positions, administrative/professional jobs won’t be filled or added. Nor will promotions be granted, unless final commitments already have been made, Floyd said in an e-mail to deans, chancellors and top administrators.
 
A moratorium on academic programs is in place at least until conclusion of the academic prioritization process, which could continue until July.
 
“The economy is clearly slowing and we must appropriately prepare,” Floyd said. “This is a preferred approach when compared to layoffs.”
