PULLMAN – Dr. Juming Tang, professor and scientist in Biological Systems Engineering, has been named the 2008 Anjan Bose Outstanding Researcher for the WSU College of Engineering and Architecture. 
 
Tang will give a talk “Multidisciplinary Research in Development of Novel Food Processing Technology based on Microwaves” at the Anjan Bose Outstanding Researcher Lecture at 3:30 p.m., April 18, in ETRL 101, on the WSU campus.
 
“He is truly an outstanding engineering researcher, whose program is highly regarded and impactful,’’ said Ralph Cavalieri, associate dean for research in the College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resources. “In a recent analysis of scholarly activity and extramural grant acquisition among all 200 faculty members associated with the Agricultural Research Center, Dr. Tang ranked as number one.”’
 
In addition to the lecture, activities will include graduate research posters and demonstrations; undergraduate senior design presentations; and student club displays.
 
Events will be held throughout the engineering buildings, Sloan, Dana and ETRL April 17 through April 18.
 
A WSU faculty member since 1995, Tang is an international leader in the areas of advanced thermal food processing techniques, non-chemical post harvest pest control and value-added processes for Washington crops.
 
He and his collaborators have formed and published the fundamental science and engineering required for FDA approval of 915-MHz microwave sterilization of foods, with the final testing currently underway.
 
He has collaborated with numerous academic, State and federal agencies, and industry researchers.  Notably, he founded the WSU Microwave Sterilization Consortium, a leading organization in microwave sterilization.
 
The Microwave Sterilization Consortium at WSU is dedicated to the development of microwave sterilization technology for the commercial production of high quality, safe and shelf-stable packaged meals for military and retail market.
 
The same technology can also be used for pasteurization of packaged foods for retail markets, thereby providing consumers with access to better quality food products.
 
Tang has published more than 151 peer-reviewed papers two books, 12 book chapters, and three patents. This high rate of research productivity is continuing with nine in-press items. Tang has mentored 20 PhD. students, eight master’s students and 10 post doctoral students.
 
The Anjan Bose Outstanding Researcher Award was created by the Advisory Board for the College of Engineering and Architecture along with friends and alumni to honor Dr. Anjan Bose for his service to the college as Dean.
