The fifth annual Undergraduate Research Poster Competition, sponsored by the College of Sciences, allows students to go through the same process that professional scientists use to present the results of their research to colleagues at national meetings.

Each year the number of students participating grows significantly, and this year new prizes for the competition will be provided by the Center for Environmental Research, Education and Outreach, the Center for Integrated Biotechnology, and the Center for Reproductive Biology.

Students will present research about subjects ranging from mathematics to materials science and from environmental science to evolutionary theory.

“WSU is noted for providing research experiences with our top faculty to our undergraduates,” said College of Sciences Associate Dean Mary Sanchez Lanier. “The research posters give the students the chance to present their work to faculty judges and to the public.”

The posters are explained and defended by their student authors and judged by a wide group of faculty from WSU, the University of Idaho and several professionals in the private sector.

High school students and science and math teachers from around the area come to the event. This year, visiting Future Cougars of Color will also be in attendance, taking in some of the best research done by science, math and engineering majors at WSU.

The annual event includes refreshments and door prizes for visitors. Awards to undergraduates, including cash prizes, will be announced starting at 5:30 p.m. by College of Sciences Dean Michael Griswold.

All parts of the event are free and open to the public.
