Men and women Cougs fall to Stanford

PULLMAN — WSU women’s basketball team fell 74-52 to No. 7 Stanford on Sunday at Friel Court. The Cougars conclude their regular season with an overall record of 5-24 and 2-16 in the Pacific-10 Conference. The Cardinal improved to 27-3 on the season and 16-2 in conference play.

“I think this game shows how much we have improved this season,” WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said. “Stanford is a great program, but I am really proud of our players. Katie Appleton left it all on the floor, Ebonee Coates is playing great and I think Kezia Kelly has improved a great deal.”

The Cougars had to wait for the final conference game of the season to wrap up before learning who their first-round opponent would be. WSU, the No. 10 seed, will play the seventh-seeded Ducks in the conference tournament opener.

The Cougars and Ducks are slated to tip-off at 6 p.m., at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

On Saturday, the No. 22 ranked Cougar men gave the No. 8 ranked Cardinal a hard-fought run for their money, but came up short in the final period, 60-53.

Stanford’s Brook Lopez was the toughest on the Cougs, scoring 19 of his 25 points after halftime. This was Stanford’s sixth win in seven games, setting up a championship showdown with first-place and fourth-ranked UCLA in Westwood on Thursday.

Derrick Low scored all 14 of his points in the first half, Aron Baynes added 10 points, five rebounds and two blocks before fouling out. The Cougars, who led by as many as 14 in the first half, didn’t score over the final 3 minutes.

The Coug men have one game left to play in the regular season, as they take on Washington on Freil Court, 4:30 p.m. Saturday, March 8. Following that game, they will learn who they will take on in their first PAC-10 conference tournament game on March 12 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
