AIDS Memorial Quilt, HIV Discussions

RICHLAND — Seven blocks from the national AIDS Memorial Quilt will be on display Monday, Nov. 26, through Saturday, Dec. 1, at Washington State University Tri-Cities.

The exhibit features a special awareness event each day, ranging from free HIV testing to a discussion on the history of AIDS and HIV in the Tri-Cities.

The exhibit and events are in the WSU Tri-Cities West Building Atrium at 2710 University Drive, Richland. The West Building is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays and from 8;30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission to all events and to the exhibit is free and open to the public.

Each block of The AIDS Memorial Quilt contains eight 3-by-6 foot panels, each documenting the life of a person who died of AIDS. Founded in 1987, the entire quilt now has more than 44,000 individual panels representing AIDS victims in 38 countries and all 50 states. The WSU Tri-Cities display is tied to World AIDS Day, which is Saturday, Dec. 1. The AIDS Memorial Quilt and events are sponsored by a number of student organizations and community groups.

Scheduled events at WSU Tri-Cities are:

*  Opening ceremony, 12:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26. WSU Tri-Cities Chancellor Vicky L. Carwein will give a short speech about her experience as the Dean of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she conducted HIV and AIDS research.

* Agency Fair, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27. Representatives from Vista Youth Center, Pride Foundation, Benton Franklin Health District, Planned Parenthood, and the T.E.A.M.S. support group will be available to provide information.

*  Panel discussion about being HIV-positive in the Tri-Cities, noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28. Speakers are from the T.E.A.M.S. support group for people infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS. The group is based at the River of Life Metropolitan Community Church in Kennewick.

*  “A history of AIDS and HIV in the Tri-Cities” talk by community member Ruby Barnett, including a display of AIDS-related posters and other items she has collected over the years, 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29.

* Free HIV testing in West 124 (an office downstairs in the West building, near the Atrium), 9 a.m. to noon, Friday, Nov. 30. HIV testing also is available at the Planned Parenthood office, 7426 W. Bonnie Place, Kennewick.

* Spiritual Service with Silvana Krogs in recognition of World AIDS Day, 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1. Closing of the exhibit.
