Through state, regional and national festivals, KCACTF honors excellence of overall production and offers student artists individual recognition through awards and scholarships in playwriting, acting, criticism, directing and design.
KCACTF, a national theatre program and network of more than 600 academic institutions from across the country, encourages colleges and universities to give distinguished productions of new plays, especially those written by students, the classics revitalized or reconceived, and experimental works.
All three WSU actors—Justin Hansen, Sable Phillippe and Dana Belsel—performed in this October’s “Stage One,” a set of four one-act plays written, acted and directed by WSU students.
Hansen was nominated for his portrayal of Frankie in “Reunion,” by Alan Peery. Phillippe and Belsel were chosen for their roles as Rainy and Therese in Laura Karavitis’ play “Pouring Rain.”
The Irene Ryan acting scholarships provide recognition, honor and financial assistance to outstanding student performers wishing to pursue further education. The Irene Ryan Foundation awards 16 regional and two national scholarships annually.
Student actors may travel to their designated KCACTF annual regional festival and compete, through the audition process, for the scholarships. The winners are invited to the national competition. WSU Theatre is a member of KCACTF Region 7, which includes Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming. For 2008, the festival will be held in Laramie, WY, Feb. 18-22.
