Second annual math and science day

VANCOUVER – Southwest Washington Math, Engineering and Science Achievement will hold its second annual Math and Science Day, 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at WSU Vancouver.

Math and Science Day promotes math and science literacy, and career options to middle school students with innovative, interactive and engaging hands-on science exhibits, demonstrations and lab activities. MESA connects math, engineering and science to everyday life, helping students envision themselves in these careers.

MESA primarily serves underrepresented minority students and their families: African American, Native American, Latino and female, by closing the achievement gap and offering support systems for entering college.

SW WashingtonMESA currently runs programs in six area middle schools and one high school in the Evergreen, Vancouver and Washougal school districts.

At the 2006 Math and Science Day, one student said, “I like the fact that so many things were ‘hands-on’.”

This year 150 students from seven schools, professors from WSU Vancouver, instructors from Clark College and area industry partners, including Hewlett-Packard, will be among the participants.
