Powwow Celebration to be held at WSU

PULLMAN- The 32nd annual Pah Loots Pu Powwow Celebration will be held in the Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum April 21-22, with Grand Entries at noon and 7 p.m. on Saturday and at noon on Sunday.

Admission is free and is open to the public.

Natives and non-natives alike have come together for the Powwow at Washington State University since 1975 to enjoy and celebrate indigenous culture. Sponsored by the Associated Students of Washington State University Ku-Au-Mah, Native American Women’s Association and the Native American Alliance, the Powwow has served as a unifying outlet for the traditional and spiritual facets of all inter-tribal students, friends and families.

The Pah Loots Pu honors students and pays tribute to the radiance and diversity of Native heritage. “To Powwow is to acknowledge indigenous existence. This is indigenous land no matter who labels, maps or renames … we will continue to Powwow!” said Jody Pepion, a WSU graduate student.

This year’s Host Drum will be The Boyz, who are legendary throughout Indian Country. The celebration will also bring in Arena Director Corey Reeder, and Emcees Gabby Corral and Mike Squeochs. The world renowned Northern Cree will once again be in attendance this year for our drum contest as well!

Featuring an emphasis on education, there will be ceremonies honoring graduating students. In addition to the dance and drum competitions, there will also be recognition for the retiring Royalty and the crowning of the newly appointed Miss Pah Loots Pu 2007.

The largest WSU student-run event, the Powwow will consist of Native American dancing, drumming, food, arts and crafts. Guest speakers and other multicultural entertainment will be showcased over the two days.
