Washington State University bestowed the 2007 Mom of the Year Award to Evelyn Sacchi during the annual Mom’s Weekend Brunch on Saturday, April 14.
A resident of Spokane, Sacchi was nominated by her son, Raymond Sacchi a doctoral student at WSU.
Sacchi, who could not attend the ceremony due to illness, was described by her son as encouraging and humble, “which is precisely why I believe she deserves to be nominated. The best people in the world never recognize their own sacrifice or just how special they are to those around them,” Sacchi’s son wrote in the nomination.
The Mom of the Year 2007 worked as a nurse and later became a caseworker in the Washington State Department of Social and health Services. Her son described in his nomination how his mother grew up as a foster child to become a nurse, because she wanted to earn a living helping others, especially young children.
Sacchi, who is currently undergoing treatment for terminal breast cancer, had to overcome the death of her daughter, a vocal music major student at WSU, in 2003. After the car accident, her son described how she “pushed aside the pain she felt for the loss of her child” and encouraged him to continue his graduate work at WSU. “She has always instilled a love of learning and an emphasis on education,” said her son.
The Mom of the Year Award is coordinated by the Mom’s Weekend Committee under the direction of the Women’s Resource Center. The award is presented each year to recognize the impact mothers make on their children’s lives and to honor their personal achievements and their contributions to WSU and their local community.
