Six people from the WSU community were honored as Mentors of the Year for 2007 at the April 5 Mentor Recognition Ceremony sponsored by the 2007 Women & Leadership Forum.

Denise Blacker and Vickie Chalmers, ceremony co-chairs, read the names of more than 120 WSU staff, faculty and students nominated as outstanding mentors. Then Fran McSweeney, associate vice provost for faculty affairs, awarded plaques to Linda Jusza-Schaff, WSU Police Department records manager, for the civil service staff award; Eleanor Finger, director of residence life, for the AP staff award; Judy Mitchell, dean of the College of Education, a teaching faculty (administrative) award; Lori Carris, associate professor in plant pathology, a teaching faculty award; George Mount, professor in civil and environmental engineering, a research faculty award; and Michelle Morris, student award.

All 120 nominees received lanyards reading “WSU 2007 Outstanding Mentor,” a certificate and a booklet listing comments from more than 170 nominators.

The recognition ceremony was the final event of the four-part 12th Annual Women & Leadership Forum. The first three events were workshops led by Kim Kidwell, professor, crop and soil sciences, and Krista Petty, instructor, human development.

The workshops focused on giving attendees tools to help them enhance their communication skills, control assumptions and deal with high-pressure “hot seat” situations. Each workshop is available via videostream ONLINE @ www.wla.wsu.edu. A copy of the mentor booklet will be placed on the website soon.

Attended by more than 200 people, the recognition event included mentor stories and a solo performance of “Wind Beneath My Wings” by Kayla Williams, a graduate student in the music department.
