PULLMAN – Ronald W. Hardy, director of the University of Idaho’s Hagerman Fish Culture Experiment Station and director of the UI’s Aquaculture Research Institute, will deliver the third annual John E. Halver Endowed Lecture at 2:10 p.m., Friday, Oct. 13, in room T-101 of Washington State University’s Food Science and Human Nutrition Building.
Hardy will speak on “Fish Nutrition Research: Differences and Similarities with Livestock Nutrition and What the Future Holds.”
Hardy, who is also a professor of animal and veterinary sciences, has evaluated such potential feed ingredients as soy products; grain protein concentrates; and other plant-derived products, such as full-fat linseed and pea protein, as alternative feed ingredients for fish meal and fish oil for use in salmon feeds.
He is involved in research that seeks to recover and utilize by-products of seafood processing from the marine fisheries in Alaska. The effects of diet modifications on nutrient retention and effluents are a major focus of his work, as is product quality and healthfulness of farmed fish.
Hardy holds a bachelor’s of science degree in zoology from the University of Washington, a master’s of science in nutrition from Washington State University and a doctorate in fisheries from the University of Washington.
The Halver Lecture was made possible by a gift from John E. and Jane Halver, 2003 recipients of the WSU Alumni Achievement Award. Halver, a professor emeritus of the University of Washington, is a leading authority on fish nutrition and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
