WSU Vancouver to offer mental health screening

VANCOUVER–In conjunction with National Depression Screening Day, Oct. 5, Washington State University Vancouver will be offering students free, anonymous mental health screening, free mental health educational materials and a chance to speak briefly with the campus personal counselor Dr. Dawnn McWatters.

The screening will be from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Student Services building, Room 130.

McWatters sees clients 14 hours per week on the WSU Vancouver campus and also has a small private practice. In addition, she works with the Oregon Department of Corrections.

“My passion and interests lie in working with the student population and in helping them succeed academically and personally,” she said.

Offering this kind of support to students supports WSU-Vancouver’s mission statement of providing students with a quality education and with the services that help them to succeed.

“Completing a college education while attempting to balance other life responsibilities can be an exciting and sometimes stressful experience,” McWatters said. “Counseling services can help students strengthen their stress and time management strategies, and improve relationship and communication skills.”

WSU Vancouver students can use her services for up to five free sessions of individual or couple psychotherapy. She also offers consultation services and support to faculty and staff, who may wish to intervene with a student in distress.

In the coming months, McWatters will present workshops on stress management and seasonal affective disorder, and is available to faculty as a guest lecturer on mental health topics.
