“Getting What You Want: Negotiation Nuance, Tactics and Strategem for Professional and Daily Life” is the title of a presentation to be held Monday, July 10, and sponsored by the Administrative Professional Advisory Council and the Work Life Advisory Committee.
Negotiation is an everyday occurrence in the workplace and at home, including issues from job assignments and duties, salary raises, negotiating contracts, purchasing equipment, to purchasing cars or even a child’s allowance. In all cases, negotiation skills are a necessity.
This presentation will address topics like:
* Do you have to be a born negotiator or can it be a learned skill?
* What elements make up a successful negotiator and a successful negotiation process?
* Learning communication skills, the negotiating processes, verbal judo and specific negotiation tactics.
The presentation will be made by Cindy Kiel, University of Nevada Reno. Kiel has a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Utah’s College of Law. She has practiced law in the fields of consumer protection (contract breaking), government records access, education law, false claims act litigation, corporate transactional work, employment law, contract litigation, immigration, and intellectual property infringement. She also started her own legal research company in Salt Lake City, Utah – “Legal Beagle Research, Inc.”
Kiel began her research administration career in 1997 at the University of Utah as a Grants and Contracts Officer in Sponsored Projects and received her certification in research administration in 2000. She has served as director of Sponsored Projects for the University of Nevada, Reno since April 2003 and has authored and contributed to nine publications on law and research administration since 1993. She also is an active member of the Society of Research Administrators serving as a speaker at international and regional meetings in the areas of international legal issues in research administration, contracting basics, departmental administration series and negotiation strategies.
