SPOKANE, Wash. — A two-day conference designed for primary care providers including physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses and allied health professionals will be held May 4-6 at the Red Lion Hotel at the Park in downtown Spokane. The conference is presented by the Inland NW Academy of Family Physicians, Family Medicine Spokane Residency Program, and the Eastern Washington Area Health Education Center, Washington State University Extension.
Primary Care Update is designed to provide the opportunity for health care professionals to participate in educational sessions and workshops designed with the primary care practitioner in mind. Attendees come from four Northwest states and Canada. Featured topics include “What You Should Know about Orthopedics,” “Sports Injuries in the Female Athlete,” “Adult ADHD,” “Palliative Care for Chronic Illness,” and “Atypical Responses to Antipsychotic Drugs in the Elderly.”
Featured speakers include Dr. Ted Rosen of Baylor University College of Medicine offering two sessions: “Granting Immunity – Medical, That Is,” and “Learning Dermoscopy – Hands On!”; Ken Cathcart of Northside Internal Medicine, Spokane – “Diagnosis and Treatment of Diabetes Type II”; Peter Kummerfeldt, of Colorado Springs, with several presentations on outdoor disaster survival; Dr. Alan Unis, Spokane – “Early Identification of Autism”; Colleen Carey, Endocrine Associates, Spokane – “Obesity and Exercise”; and Dr. Andrew Bright and Dr. Mathew Rawlins of Rockwood Clinic Spokane on gastric by-pass surgery.
In addition to the regular conference schedule, two dinner programs are offered for providers. Robert Maurer, director of Behavioral Sciences for Family Medicine Spokane, will lead a dinner workshop titled “Trademarks of Successful People.” Registration for the dinner is $35 or $60 per couple and pre-registration is required.
Also that evening, Dr. Michael Garnett of Family Practice Clinic, Goldendale, will present a dinner seminar titled “Gastroscopy and Colonscopy.”
