‘Innovators’ series heralds research achievements

Diabetes. Genetics. Infectious disease. Cancer. These timely topics of today’s health headlines also are the subjects of innovative research ongoing at Washington State University. But the quality and scope of achievement by WSU faculty has not been fully appreciated, especially among influential business and civic leaders on the west side of the state.

WSU set out to change that in fall 2005. The university sponsored a series of biotechnology presentations by top research faculty who put forth their visions for a vibrant future for those who live in Washington — and the world. Among other benefits, WSU’s successful fall “Innovators” series resulted in:
• more speaking engagements for faculty
• a presence in newsletters and on the website of the Technology Alliance, a statewide consortium of leaders from hi-tech businesses, research institutions and the community dedicated to Washington’s economic success
• interest in WSU research from life-sciences venture-capital firms and biotechnology companies.

WSU faculty will continue to present research in key areas of societal impact as the “Innovators” series resumes this spring. Monthly lectures will include:
• “Diabetes: How Sweet It Isn’t!” by R. Keith Campbell, Department of Pharmacotherapy, Thursday, Feb. 23, the Harbor Club, downtown Seattle.
• “Epigenetics, Heredity and the Environment: The Ghosts in Your Genes” by Michael Skinner, Center for Reproductive Biology, Wednesday, March 22, the Rainier Club, downtown Seattle.
• “Why Diseases Emerge: The World of Surveillance, Risk and Response” by Guy Palmer, Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology, Wednesday, April 12, the Harbor Club, downtown Bellevue.

All programs begin at 11:30 a.m. Registration is $30. Seating is limited. Register at www.wsu.edu/theinnovators.
