PULLMAN – The Board of Regents approved the schematic design Friday (Jan. 27) for a $34.6 million building to house the Washington State University Intercollegiate College of Nursing on the Riverpoint campus of WSU Spokane.
The 80,000-square-foot building will replace the school’s current facilities on Fort George Wright Drive. It will include a nursing practice lab, distance education classrooms, computer and research labs and administrative and faculty offices. It will be located on the northwest corner of Riverpoint and Spokane Falls boulevards.
Schematic design of the five-story structure was done by Integrus Architecture of Spokane in association with LMN Architects of Seattle.
Groundbreaking for the construction, which is being funded by the state, is scheduled for this fall. Construction is expected to take about two years.

In other business, the regents:
– Restated their support of the expansion of offerings at WSU Tri-Cities to make it a four-year institution. Legislation on that subject is currently pending in Olympia.
– Approved name changes for two research farms. The Cunningham Agronomy Farm, located northeast of Pullman, will be renamed the Cook Agronomy Farm in honor of R. James Cook, a leading wheat researcher and National Academy of Sciences member who retired last year as dean of the College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resource Sciences. WSU Farm 5 in Puyallup will be renamed the Roy and Marcie Goss Research Farm. Roy Goss was turfgrass extension specialist for WSU for 32 years.
– Approved a name change for the College of Business and Economics, which will now be known as the College of Business.
– Approved the purchase of the Student Book Corporation Building on the WSU Vancouver campus for the appraised value of $1.1 million. The building will be converted to a student activities center. The Student Book Corporation will move into a new Student Services Building nearby when it is completed.
The next meeting of the WSU Board of Regents will be held March 3 at WSU Tri-Cities.
