WSU Jazz Festival to feature Wayne Wallace

The 2005 Washington State University Jazz Festival will present guest jazz and salsa trombonist Wayne Wallace and a number of other musical groups Nov. 9 in Bryan Hall Theatre.

The festival will include a concert by the WSU faculty group Jazz Northwest from noon to 12:30 p.m. A gala concert from 12:30-1:30 p.m. will feature a performance by Wallace with award-winning WSU Jazz Big Band, directed by Greg Yasinitsky. Admission is free.

WSU jazz faculty members Horace-Alexander Young, saxophone; Charles Argersinger, piano; David Snider, bass; and David Jarvis, percussion, will also be featured.

During Wayne’s dynamic and varied career he has performed with a number of artists, including Count Basie, Sonny Rollins, Celine Dion, Santana, Earth Wind and Fire and Pete Escovedo.

He has received numerous grants and awards for his compositions, and his recordings have received rave reviews. In his review of Wallace’s “Three In One” CD, Michael Handler of JazzWest.com writes, “[This CD] offers a ‘state of the art’ look at.composer, arranger, teacher and trombone player par excellence Wayne Wallace.” Bill Bernardi writes, “On this album, Wallace tackles various Latin sounds with mostly original compositions. He creates a wonderful sound throughout.”

The program will include Wallace’s arrangement of Bud Powell’s “Un Poco Loco,” WSU bass professor David Snider’s arrangement of Santana’s “Europa” and Yasinitsky original’s “Jackknife” and “Setting Standards.”

Additionally, the festival will feature school groups from throughout the Northwest performing in Kimbrough Concert Hall from 8:20-11:40 a.m. and from 2-5 p.m. Wallace and WSU faculty members will also present clinics throughout the day. All of these events are open to the public without charge.

The WSU Jazz Festival is supported by the WSU School of Music and Theatre Arts, the WSU Jazz Society and the Associated Students of WSU Student Entertainment Board.
