Backpacks evoke excitement among displaced students

The more than 7,000 Backpacks for Hope collected at WSU for children who were victims of two Gulf Coast hurricanes have been delivered.

On Tuesday, Oct. 11, displaced students at Mary Hull Elementary School in San Antonio received backpacks, and autographs from Steve Gleason, amidst a fanfare of song and cheer.  Gleason, a former WSU football player and member of the New Orleans Saints, led the effort through his One Sweet World Foundation.

Students from the school will also have the opportunity to write journals about their storm experiences.  Gleason plans to visit the school monthly to offer continued support and a competition for the best journal story, the winner of which will receive a ticket to the final Saints game in San Antonio.
