On Tuesday, Oct. 4, a concert featuring the award-winning Washington State University Jazz Big Band and VOJAZZ vocal jazz ensemble will be presented at 8:00 pm in Kimbrough Concert Hall on the WSU Campus. The concert will be free of charge.
The concert will open with VOJAZZ performing under the direction of new WSU faculty member Noel Barbuto. Barbuto has sung as a featured artist with Opera Plus, the Coeur d’ Alene Symphony, Harlequin Theatre, Johnny Lewis Big Band, the Village Theatre, Carousel Players and the award-winning vocal group, the Akafellas.
VOJAZZ will perform Africa, made famous by Toto; Count ‘Em composed by Quincy Jones and Night and Day composed by Cole Porter.
The Jazz Big Band, under the direction of Meyer Distinguished Professor of Music Greg Yasinitsky, will perform Bud Powell’s Un Poco Loco as arranged by Wayne Wallace, Frank Foster’s Down for the Count from the Count Basie library, and Thomas Matta’s Another Shuffle. The band will also perform Yasinitsky’s Jackknife and his arrangement of Joe Jackson’s Private Eye.
Soloists will include trumpeter John Gronberg, pianist Bryan Werry, drummer Tiffany Stephens, trombonists Denise Snider, Kaci Eccleston and Andy Young, and saxophonists Adam Donohue, Eric Palmquist, Patrick Sheng, Chris Siegmund and Matt Lanka.
