WSU faculty jazz band books Seattle appearance

Jazz Northwest, Washington State University’s renowned faculty jazz band, will perform at Tula’s jazz club in Seattle on Wednesday, September 14 at 7:00 p.m.

“Tula’s is known in the industry as a great venue,” said Greg Yasinitsky, Washington State University professor in the School of Music and Theatre Arts and coordinator of the school’s award winning jazz studies program. “The level of expectation and sophistication among jazz fans in the greater Seattle area is high, so we always look forward to performing for Seattle audiences,” Yasinitsky said.

Yasinitsky, a saxophonist, will be joined on stage by Horace-Alexander Young – woodwinds; David Turnbull – trumpet; Charles Argersinger – keyboards; David Jarvis – percussion; and David Snider – bass. All are WSU music professors with lengthy professional credits. Members of Cougar Jazz have played with leading figures in jazz including Lionel Hampton, Clark Terry, McCoy Tyner, Abdullah Ibrahim (Dollar Brand), Randy Brecker, Bill Watrous and Bobby Shew and many others.

“Our faculty jazz band is unbeatable,” said Erich Lear, dean, college of liberal arts at Washington State and former director of the school of music. “Their appearance in Seattle is a great opportunity for jazz lovers to hear first rate jazz and it affords us the opportunity to showcase our world class musicians to a very discerning audience,” Lear said.

Tula’s, located at 2214 Second Avenue, has been listed as one of the top jazz clubs in America (downbeat magazine). The concert will be preceded by a 6:00 p.m. reception. Admission is $15.00 per person, or $25.00 per couple, with proceeds benefiting the Dean’s Excellence Fund. Reservations are required and can be secured by calling (509) 335-4581 or via e-mail, libarts@wsu.edu.
