WSU parking system moves to computerized system

PULLMAN – Washington State University Parking and Transportation Services converted to a new computerized parking management system on Aug. 1 and began annual parking permit sales.

Called the Automatic Issuance/Management System, or AIMS, the new parking management system will feature a number of service improvements and allow for the use of automated hand-held devices by parking officers issuing parking warnings and tickets on campus. The new devices also will allow officers to record and report parking lot survey information, parking lot maintenance needs, and other useful data.

“We are very excited to increase customer service to our parking patrons and to modernize our operations and information systems,” said John Shaheen, director of WSU Parking, Transportation, and Visitor Center.

With the Aug. 1 implementation of the new parking system, owners of ticketed vehicles will be able to pay and appeal tickets online using the Parking and Transportation Web site at http://www.wsu.edu/parking.

Although not available initially, the new system also is expected to provide for a number of additional service improvements, such as a feature that will make it possible to both purchase and renew annual parking permits online.

This year, however, the sale of new permits is scheduled to begin as usual at the Parking and Transportation office on Aug 2. The office is located on the corner of Colorado and D streets, just around the corner from the Bookie.

Those who wish to purchase a parking permit will need to present their vehicle license plate number, make, model, and color, as well as a photo ID, such as a Cougar Card or driver’s license at the parking office.

Residence hall students also will need to present a copy of their vehicle registration.

Other service improvements slated for implementation at a later date will allow permit holders to update their own parking account on the Web. Among those improvements are features which will allow users to access the Web to update their vehicle or contact information or add their names to lists of those waiting for new or upgraded permits.

Shaheen said the new AIMS system replaces an antiquated DOS-based system and is expected to increase the efficiency and productivity of the parking management system and reduce the parking office’s reliance on paper documentation.

The upgrade of the computerized parking management system is a feature of WSU’s 5-Year Parking Plan. Details of the plan can be obtained on the Parking and Transportation Services Web site or by calling 509-335-PARK (7275).
