Fedale receives ADEC’s Irving Award

Scott V. Fedale, chair of the information department of Washington State University’s College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences, received the 2005 Irving Award at the annual meeting of the American Distance Education Consortium in New Orleans on April 27.

The Irving Award is the organization’s highest honor. The award is named for Irvin Omtvedt, ADEC’s first board chair.

ADEC is a non-profit distance education consortium of 65 state university and land-grant colleges. ADEC promotes high quality, economical distance education programs and services to diverse audiences by land-grant colleges and universities.

Fedale has been active in ADEC for 15 years. He was a member of the first programs and operations committee of the Agricultural Satellite Corporation, ADEC’s predecessor. He developed the Ag*SAT infrastructure at WSU, including a campus-based satellite downlink, distance education studio and downlinks at extension offices throughout Washington. In the early 1990s, Fedale bridged the possibilities of the Internet with educational program delivery over the Ag*SAT network, producing numerous educational offerings and sharing them across the consortium.

His work helped establish the base for the consortium to work to seek funding from the National Science Foundation for the Advanced Internet Satellite Extension Program. WSU is a core partner in this $5 million activity.

Fedale also serves as director of Information Technology for WSU Extension. He has been on the WSU faculty since 1989.
