Flexible spending accounts save money

The last day to incur costs under the 2004 flexible spending account plan is Dec. 31. Meanwhile, the deadline to sign up for the plan in 2005 is Nov. 30.

“Many WSU employees are seeing the advantage of the flexible spending account now that over-the-counter drugs, as well as pharmaceuticals, are covered” said Jan Rauk, associate director of Benefit Services. “It is a great way to have expenses such as medical, dental, vision and drug costs paid with your pretax dollars.”

Participants in the 2004 plan have until March 31, 2005, to submit claims for reimbursement of eligible medical expenses incurred during the year. Expenses that may be included range from deductibles, co-payments and out-of-pocket vision expenses for hardware to a wide variety of over-the-counter expenses such as cough syrup, aspirin and first-aid kits.

For more information about covered expenses and reimbursement requests, go to http://www.wsu.edu/benefits and click on Employee Benefits, then on Flexible Spending Accounts.

To participate in a flexible spending account for 2005 you must re-enroll. First-time participants also must complete and return the 2005 enrollment form to Benefit Services.

Forms and information can be found at http://www.wsu.edu/benefits under Hot Topics and at the Benefit Services service window in the French Administration Building. Mail the completed form to the WSU Benefits Office, 232 French Administration, Pullman, WA 99164-1024, or to campus zip 1024, by Nov. 30.
