Recollection, rumor mingle in new exhibit

“Family Fables,” mixed media paintings by Sally Graves Machlis, will show at the CUB Gallery through Sept. 18. Admission is free. Gallery hours are Mon., Wed., Fri. 10 a.m.-3 p.m., and Tue., Thu. 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

“Artistic expression often begins with personal recollection,” says Machlis, who holds joint faculty appointments at the University of Idaho in the Department of Art and Design and the College of Education/Art Education. “Many of the images in these mixed media pieces are family photographs, records, notes and letters. The text is a combination of memory and imagination — family fables, whispered rumor, traditions and fictions are mixed.”

Machlis is the co-author and illustrator of a series of children’s books, and her artwork has been exhibited throughout the country.
