PULLMAN, Wash. — Canned and non-perishable food items will be collected at the Pullman and Moscow Safeway stores Jan. 19 during the sixth annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Food Drive.

The food drive, “A Day On, Not a Day Off,” will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Food items collected will benefit food banks in both communities. It is the largest single-day food drive in the area, organizers said.

Chris Nash, manager of the Pullman Safeway, is gearing up for the event. “We look forward to this particular food drive each year; it does well for the community.”

“Safeway is always generous and accommodating to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration,” said chair of the committee Herb Delaney. “Its involvement always helps make this such a great event.”

The number of donations from year to year has steadily increased, Delaney said. “The food drive comes at a good time because the local food banks normally experience a high volume of clients during the holidays, and the food and other items are low at the beginning of the year. This food drive really helps get things going for the new year, and hopefully, more people are being served because of it.”
