PULLMAN, Wash. — Again this football season, Ferdinand’s, Washington State University’s gourmet ice cream shop, is helping put the campus in a competitive spirit for its home games. This week the outlet for Cougar ice cream and cheese is preparing the “Sun Devil Melt-Down” sundae as the football team practices to meet the Arizona State University team Saturday at Martin Stadium.

Earlier football-themed favorites for home games were the “Lobo E-Lemon-Ator” (for the University of New Mexico), “Beaver Tail Sundae” (for Oregon State) and the “Bear Trap Sundae” (for the UCLA Bruins).

The Sun Devil Melt-Down is a scoop of strawberry ice cream, smothered in lemon sauce, with Red Hots candy on top.

In addition to its football sundaes, the Ferdinand’s staff tries to keep up with customer favorites and requests.

“This year we’ve revived our hot fudge machine … many customers have found pleasure in that goodie,” said Russ Salvadalena, WSU Creamery manager. “We’ve also experimented with more seasonal flavors, due to the success of items like Pumpkin, Egg Nog, and Lemon Chiffon.” One new seasonal flavor due out in January is Hot Fudge Brownie.

Editor’s Note:

Ferdinand’s features old-fashioned ice cream and soda fountain treats, exclusive ice cream flavors and gourmet coffee and espresso drinks. It is located in the Food Quality Building on the WSU Campus, two blocks east of the Stadium Way tennis courts.
