Reed, Bates to Address Combined Fund Drive Kickoff

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington Secretary of State Sam Reed and WSU Provost Robert Bates will address the 2003-04 Washington State University Combined Fund Drive campaign kickoff meeting, which will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday (Sept. 23) in the Great Hall of the Lewis Alumni Centre.

The Combined Fund Drive is the charitable organization within the Washington State government.

As secretary of state, Reed serves as the state’s chief elections officer, chief corporations officer and supervisor of the State Archives.

Last week, Reed joined with Attorney General Christine Gregoire and Washington State Grange attorney Jim Johnson in announcing a legal strategy to preserve the state’s blanket primary, which has been declared unconstitutional by a three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Reed also has launched an aggressive campaign to encourage the youth vote, and is overseeing changes in state election procedures aimed at complying with new federal mandates imposed after the 2000 presidential election controversy.

Reed grew up in Wenatchee and attended Washington State University, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in political science.
