WSU Spokane Student Takes First in Lighting Design Competition

SPOKANE, Wash. — Jamie M. Herring, of Washington State University Spokane’s Interdisciplinary Design Institute, was awarded first place in the student category of Cooper Lighting’s 26th Annual Source Awards, a national lighting design competition.

Herring won for her conceptual lighting design of a high-end apparel Ducati retail store, which she named “Corsia.”

“Ducati motorcycles have long enjoyed a status among the creative community as leaders in forward-thinking design and leading-edge technological development,” Herring said. “The design concept for the store encompasses the metaphor of the road, which begins as a point and evolves into a line through which inspirations and imagination evoke ideas of destination, taking you to a place where these ideas escape the fantasy and become reality. This concept was realized through the play of light and layering throughout the space.”

She used Halo recessed downlighting and Halo Power-Trac® lamp holders, along with Neo-ray, Corelite and Metalux suspended architectural linear fluorescent luminaries to layer the interior space, which includes an interactive motorcycle display.

Herring graduated from Cascade High School in Everett. She earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree from WSU, the latter in interior design at WSU Spokane’s spring commencement ceremony in May.

The competition is an opportunity for professional and student designers in lighting and other related disciplines to gain national peer recognition for the outstanding use of Cooper Lighting brands. All winners receive crystal trophies, and student winners receive cash awards and an opportunity to attend educational classes at the Source, Cooper Lighting’s education center in Georgia.

Judges for the 26th annual competition were Barbara Cianci Horton, LC, International Association of Lighting Designers; Carrie Knowlton, Illuminating Engineering Society, employee of Horton Lees Brogden Lighting Design in New York; Charles D. Gandy, fellow of the American Society of Interior Designers and the International Interior Design Association, Charles Gandy Inc. in Atlanta; and Michael J. Smith, Michael John Smith Lighting Design in Houston.

Cooper Lighting, whose brands include Halo, Metalux, Portfolio, Neo-Ray, Corelite, Lumark, McGraw-Edison, Sure-Lites, Fail-Safe, Lumière, Modular Wiring Systems, Shaper and Iris lighting systems, is one of the largest manufacturers of incandescent, fluorescent and high-intensity discharge fixtures.
