PULLMAN, Wash. — Rand Lewis, a retired military officer, will speak on homeland defense in the Pacific Northwest on June 17 at Washington State University.
Lewis, director of the Martin School of International Affairs at the University of Idaho, will speak from noon-1 p.m. in the Compton Union Building, Room B7-9. The speech is part of the Brown Bag Series sponsored by WSU Campus Involvement.
Lewis retired from the military in 1996 after more than 29 years of service, as both an engineer and as a foreign area officer. He then returned to Moscow and began teaching history courses at WSU and UI, including an upper-division course in international terrorism. In 1998 he was appointed the first associate director of the Martin Institute at UI and in July 2000, was appointed as the first full-time director.
In 2001, Lewis was appointed director of the National Alliance for Information Assurance, which includes five universities from across the country designated as Centers of Excellence in Information Assurance by the National Security Agency.
Lewis has published a number of papers and two monographs on right-wing extremism in Europe. He was instrumental in developing the counter-terrorism program for the Department of State Security Assistance and has extensive experience in international negotiations. Lewis continues to provide consulting services to the military departments and State Department in counter- and anti-terrorism, which includes international terrorist organizations, cyber security and personal security awareness.
