Variety of speakers featured

A variety of distinguished speakers have been scheduled for Washington State University’s spring commencement ceremonies around the state.

The May 10 ceremony at Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum marks the 107th commencement exercise on the Pullman campus.

• Kathi Goertzen, an Emmy Award winning news anchor for Seattle’s KOMO-TV and a WSU graduate, will speak as part of the 8 a.m. ceremony for the College of Liberal Arts.
• Jack Creighton Jr., strategic director of the Madrona Venture Group in Seattle and vice chairman of the board at Unocal Corp., delivers his address during the 11:30 a.m. ceremony for the College of Business and Economics and College of Education.
• Jerry Quinn Lee, of MulvannyG2 Architecture, the country’s 10th largest architectural firm, will speak during the 3 p.m. ceremony for the colleges of Agriculture and Home Economics, Engineering and Architecture, Nursing, Pharmacy, Sciences and Veterinary Medicine.

President V. Lane Rawlins will preside at each of the Pullman ceremonies.

A total of about 2,250 students — 2,000 undergraduates and 250 graduate and professional — are expected to take part in the three Pullman ceremonies, said commencement coordinator Teri Nelson.

• Commencement for WSU Spokane and the Intercollegiate College of Nursing begins 2 p.m. Friday, May 9, at the Spokane Opera House. The speaker is WSU Spokane interim chancellor Rom Markin.
• The Tri-Cities ceremony will begin 6 p.m. Friday, May 16, in the Tri-Cities Coliseum. The speaker will be James Cochran, founding dean of WSU Tri-Cities.
• Vancouver ceremonies begin 1 p.m. Saturday, May 17, in the Vancouver Plaza. The speaker will be Brian Baird, U.S. Representative, third district.
