Jazz program shines in Moscow

Students of the Jazz Studies Program at WSU walked away big winners from the 2003 Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival at the University of Idaho in Moscow.

Results of the College Day competition ended with WSU winning numerous awards including first place prizes for the Jazz Big Band; Anna Webber, flute; Scott Tenhulzen, drums; and Rachel Bade, soprano voice. Spencer Morris won first place in both vocal composition and instrumental composition.

“These awards are a tribute to our excellent students and my superb colleagues teaching in Jazz Studies at WSU,” said Greg Yasinitsky, coordinator of jazz studies at WSU.

The first Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival at the University of Idaho was a one-day event when it began in 1967. Today the festival spans four days and attracts as many as 14,000 college, high school and elementary students, as well as internationally known jazz musicians.
