Robert P. Hartwig, senior vice president and chief economist for the Insurance Information Institute, will answer “What Keeps Insurance CEOs Awake at Night?” at Washington State University#s 2002 Walton Lecturer, 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, in Todd Hall, Room 276.
Hartwig, a renowned scholar on property/casualty insurance, frequently appears as a television commentator on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, CNN and CNBC. He has published articles on insurance issues and has been quoted in “The Wall Street Journal,” “The New York Times,” “The Washington Post,” “Business Week,” “Forbes” and “The Economist.”
The lecture kicks off the fall advisory board meeting for the Risk Management and Insurance Program, part of WSU#s College of Business and Economics. Insurance Industry Professionals Night is Oct. 10 and gives students the chance to meet and visit with working professionals, including program alumni.
A student of economics, Hartwig earned doctoral and master#s degrees from the University of Illinois and a bachelor#s degree from the University of Massachusetts, graduating with honors. He served as the director of economic research and senior economist for the National Council of Compensation Insurance, where he performed rate of return and cost of capital modeling and testified on rate adequacy. He also worked as a senior economist for Swiss Reinsurance Group and as a senior statistician for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. At the Insurance Information Institute, he assists the organization in its mission to “improve public understanding of insurance, what it does and how it works.”
The Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of Washington sponsor the lecture to honor its past president, Max Walton. The annual lecture has brought prominent speakers from the insurance and risk management field since 1993.
