WSU Hosts Yale Economist Shiller As Brinson Lecturer April 26

PULLMAN, Wash. — Yale University economist Robert Shiller, author of the New York Times Bestseller “Irrational Exuberance,” will present the inaugural Gary P. Brinson Distinguished Speaker Lecture at 3 p.m. Friday, April 26, in Todd Hall, Room 276, on the Washington State University campus.

Shiller, a frequent CNBC guest and the Stanley B. Resor Professor of Economics at Yale University, has titled his speech “Irrepressible Exuberance? The Outlook for the Stock Market and the Economy from 2002.”

“The Economist noted that Dr. Shiller’s book ‘should be compulsory reading for anybody interested in Wall Street or financially exposed to it,’” said Rick Sias, WSU finance professor. “If you are interested in hearing a devout bear’s opinion regarding future long-run stock market returns – such as on your retirement money, I invite you to attend this presentation.”

Sias holds an endowed chair in investment management created by and named for Gary Brinson, a WSU MBA alumnus. Brinson is the founder and retired chairman of Brinson Partners, Inc., and is a nationally recognized authority on global investing. He served as an officer of the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts and is a member of the Economic Club of Chicago. In 1999, he received the Award for Professional Excellence from the Association for Investment Management Research and in 1991, he was named the Outstanding Financial Executive by the Financial Management Association. After his retirement in 2000, he, his wife and two daughters created The Brinson Foundation, a philanthropic organization.

“It is a tremendous honor to have Dr. Shiller present this first Brinson lecture,” said Sias. “We plan that this year’s presentation will set the stage for many outstanding lectures in years to come.”
