Gov. Locke Appoints Weyerhaeuser Executive to WSU Regents Board

PULLMAN, Wash. — Gov. Gary Locke named Weyerhaeuser executive Steven Hill to the Washington State University Board of Regents and reappointed Peter Goldmark to the board.

The appointments, which require Washington State Senate confirmation, take effect immediately and extend through Sept. 30, 2007.

Hill of Tacoma is senior vice president for human resources at Weyerhaeuser Co. He is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and has his master’s degree in business administration from the UC at Los Angeles. In 1978, he was named a White House Fellow and served in the Office of the Secretary, U.S. Department of Energy. Hill also is on the Seattle Symphony’s executive committee.

“(Hill) has a great business and political background and an appreciation for public higher education,” said WSU President V. Lane Rawlins. “His strong corporate and political ties are evident. I am looking forward to getting to know him better. My contacts at Weyerhaeuser have nothing but praise for his ability and commitment.”

Hill replaces Richard A. Davis of Spokane, who served on the board since 1990. Rawlins called Davis “an outstanding regent who put in much more than the required effort.

“His background was ideal for advising us in financial and business matters, and his political knowledge was invaluable,” Rawlins said of the former regent, who recently retired from Pentzer Corp., a private investment company in Spokane. “Dick will be missed, but we intend to keep contact and seek his advice on many matters.”

Goldmark of Okanogan is owner and operator of the Double J Ranch. He graduated from Haverford College and received his doctorate in molecular biology from the UC at Berkeley in 1971. Goldmark is the former director of the state Department of Agriculture and former chair of the Governor’s Council on Agriculture and the Environment. He has served as a WSU regent since 1996.

“Peter Goldmark’s education, vocation and interests make him a very special regent,” Rawlins said. “His continuing interest in research is an inspiration, and he never fails to support the very best things we do here. I am personally in his debt because he recruited me and has been a great support. We are all delighted that he has agreed to another term.”
