SPOKANE, Wash. — Security issues will be addressed from the ground up during the virtual symposium “Security by Design: Insights and Best Practices,” set for Nov. 5 at Washington State University Spokane.
The symposium will be presented from 10 a.m.-noon in the Phase I Classroom Building Auditorium at the Riverpoint Higher Education Park, 668 N. Riverpoint Blvd., Spokane.
“The Sept. 11 events have brought security issues to the forefront of national attention and debate,” said Forster Ndubisi, director of WSU Spokane’s Interdisciplinary Design Institute and a professor of landscape architecture. “It is timely to re-examine security and safety issues from multiple perspectives — in this case, through design.”
Design Institute has partnered with the Spokane chapter of the American Institute of Architects and Spokane Community Oriented Policing Services to create an ongoing community dialogue about the built environment. Offered through the support of Autodesk, the interactive Web conference will address anticipating and responding to security threats through building design. The conference will feature a panel of nationally recognized security and design specialists, followed by a brief panel of local experts discussing future directions for security by design practices within the region.
Panelists include experienced architects, security consultants and their clients. The design practitioners will share practical approaches and case studies to better prepare architects and designers for increasing requests for security-related knowledge from their clients and community.
Participants will receive information on how to:
— Recognize the nature of security threats to the built environment and the relative risks associated with those threats;
— Assess owner/client perspectives and concerns regarding security threats to their buildings;
— Develop strategies and methods to plan, design and construct buildings to mitigate or minimize security threats;
— Integrate knowledge and information concerning security threats into the design of buildings now on the boards; and
— Advise clients about security threats and the integration of security concerns throughout the building life cycle.
The symposium is free for Design Institute faculty and students with a valid identification card. General admission is $10 payable in advance or at the door. All conference attendees must RSVP to AIA-Spokane by 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2.
