Sustainable Design, Construction Workshops Offered by WSU

SPOKANE, Wash. — Workshops on sustainable design and construction are being offered by Washington State University Spokane’s Interdisciplinary Design Institute. The workshops are designed to enable professionals in the field to address emerging issues and attain professional certification.

Workshop topics include indoor environmental quality, HVAC and energy systems, and water and wastewater management, among others.

Successful course completion allows design and construction practitioners to design or adapt projects to meet any of the three levels of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program certification. The standards are becoming prerequisites for award of public construction funding in Washington, Oregon, California and several other locations.

The next workshop is Oct. 30, and all are set for Tuesday evenings in three-hour sessions through April 30 at WSU Spokane in the Metropolitan Financial Center, 601 W. First Ave.

Continuing education credits are available through the American Institute of Architects for the Sustainable Design and Construction Seminar Series. Call 509/358-7920 for more information and a registration form.

Students also may enroll in the courses for academic credit, which may be applied toward the master of science in architecture degree that WSU Spokane offers on an executive track schedule designed for working professionals. A special emphasis within the degree on design-build management also is available. For information on academic credit, contact Jaime Rice, 509/358-7945, jlrice@wsu.edu.

The workshop series is sponsored by the Resource Efficient Design and Construction Council, Washington State Department of Ecology, IDI, Avistacorp, WSU Energy Office, City of Spokane Solid Waste Division and WSU Conferences and Professional Programs.

WSU Spokane’s IDI advances knowledge to enhance the quality of people’s lives in the built and natural environment through interdisciplinary instruction, research and community service in design and construction.
