PULLMAN, Wash. — More than 400 students from Washington and Idaho high schools will gather at Washington State University Thursday, Oct. 25, to participate in the 11th annual WSU Math Day competition.
WSU math professor Duane DeTemple said the competition is a celebration of the accomplishments of both the student participants and their teachers. “Math Day continues to provide a forum for high school students from Washington and northern Idaho to demonstrate their mathematical talent and knowledge.”
The event is set for the Compton Union Building, starting at 9 a.m. with a welcome from WSU Provost Ron Hopkins during a general meeting in the ballroom. At 9:40 a.m., all students will take the PROBE, a comprehensive exam. Five WSU scholarships ranging from $2,000 to 3,000 will be given to the competition winners.
At 11:20 a.m., student teams, categorized according to their school’s enrollment size, will battle in a double elimination, “College Bowl”-style competition. Final rounds will begin at 2:35 p.m. in the CUB Ballroom. Team trophies and individual medallions will be awarded to the top three teams in both small and large school categories. Leon Radziemski, the College of Sciences dean, will speak at the awards banquet at 3 p.m. to close out the day.
The following Washington high schools are sending math teams: Asotin; Connell; Decatur, Federal Way; Eastmont, Wenatchee; Freeman, Rockford; International High School, Bellevue; Kamiakin and Southridge, Kennewick; Kiona Benton, Benton City; Lakeside, Nine Mile Falls; Liberty, Spangle; Moses Lake; Pasco; Prosser; Pullman; Richland; Lewis and Clark, Mead and University, Spokane; St. John-Endicott; Thomas Jefferson, Auburn; DeSales Catholic, Walla Walla; Walla Walla; and White Swan.
Idaho high schools include Deary; Lewiston; Logos, Moscow; NezPerce; Sandpoint; Troy; and Kendrick.
