PULLMAN, Wash. — The Washington State University Symphony Orchestra will perform its first concert of the school year at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14 in WSU’s Bryan Hall Auditorium. The performance is free and open to the public.
Faculty soloists Julie Wieck and Sheila Converse will join the orchestra, conducted by WSU faculty member Keating Johnson.
The concert will include “Romanian Folk Dances” by Bela Bartok. Wieck will perform the “Ruckert Lieder,” composed by Gustav Mahler. Also on the program will be the overture to Johann Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus.” The WSU School of Music and Theatre Arts’ Opera Workshop and the Symphony Orchestra plan a full production of the operetta in April.
A suite from Bizet’s “Carmen” also will be performed. In addition to the usual orchestra suite featuring the four preludes to each act of the opera, Converse will sing the role of Carmen for both the Habanera and the Sequidilla.
The concert was originally scheduled for Oct. 18 and moved to avoid conflicts with the rescheduled WSU football game.
