PULLMAN, Wash. — Balancing water usage with energy needs is the topic of a talk Monday, Sept. 17, at Washington State University by Idaho Power Co. executive John Prescott. The 3:10 p.m. talk is set for Carpenter Hall, Room 102.
Prescott’s topic, “Hydropower and Fish…Striving for Balance,” has been a topic of increasing interest both regionally and nationally during the past few years. He will discuss management of Idaho’s hydroelectric resources on the Snake River.
Prescott argues that hydroelectric power production and sustainable salmon runs can coexist with the aid of science, sound policy, accountability and technology advancement.
Prescott has held various key positions in IPC during the last 20 years, including station engineering manager and general manager of stations. He was president of Stellar Dynamics, an Idaho Power subsidiary that designed and developed substation and power plant automation and control system integration. GE-Harris Energy Control Systems purchased Stellar Dynamics in August. Prescott testified last spring before the U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on Energy and Commerce on hydropower licensing, where he represented both Idaho Power and the National Hydropower Association.
An Idaho native, Prescott received a bachelor’s degree in general engineering from Idaho State University and a master’s in electrical engineering from the University of Idaho. He is a doctoral candidate in mechanical engineering (energy studies) at University of Wales College of Cardiff, United Kingdom.
