PULLMAN, Wash. — A second candidate for Washington State University provost will make a visit Sept. 24-25 to the Pullman campus.
Robert C. Bates, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of microbiology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, will meet with search committee members and others during the two-day visit.
Bates currently heads the largest college at Virginia Tech. He has served as an administrator since 1987 and was associate dean for research, facilities and graduate studies. Bates has served on and directed many committees and task forces within the college and university, including membership in the Graduate Tuition Scholarship Committee, the College Facilities Planning Committee and the Virginia Tech Intellectual Properties Board.
He joined the Virginia Tech faculty in 1972 as an assistant professor and has been a full professor since 1985. He holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Lewis and Clark College, a master’s degree in microbiology from WSU and a Ph.D. in virology from Colorado State University.
He has published extensively in professional journals and is a member of numerous professional societies.
In addition to his research into parvoviruses, Bates has taught courses in microbiology and virology and has reviewed manuscripts for journals such as the Journal of Virology and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. He has also directed the work of numerous graduate students.
Another candidate for the provost position was announced last week.
Alan G. Goodridge, executive dean of Ohio State University’s Colleges of Arts and Sciences, will visit the Pullman campus Sept. 13-14.
Goodridge’s research interests include the molecular basis for nutritional and hormonal regulation of gene expression, metabolic regulation and hormone action. He has received several major grants from the National Institutes of Health and U.S. Department of Agriculture.
An open session for Goodridge is planned for 2:30-4 p.m. Sept. 14 in Food Science Human Nutrition, Room T101. A similar session is set for Bates from 2:30-4 p.m. Sept. 25, also in FSHN, Room T101. Receptions will follow each open session.
