PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University President V. Lane Rawlins told the Board of Regents today he has named information technology director Mary Doyle as the university’s interim vice president for information technology. The two-year appointment is effective Sept. 1.
In her position, she will oversee two major units: Educational Telecommunications and Technology and Information Technology.
Rawlins said he was asking Doyle to prepare a technology plan that will take steps to see that WSU faculty, staff and students will always be on the cutting edge of technology.
In discussions with faculty members during the last year, the WSU president said he could see the new position was needed in the university administration. “We all are dependent on information technology and it must be part of the administration,” Rawlins said.
“Her success in directing two important university units assures me that her leadership in information technology for WSU will provide the direction necessary for our world class faculty and students,” the president said.
Doyle said she is pleased to serve the university in the new position.
“WSU has long been noted for its focus on technology. The creation of this role sends a strong signal that we are serious about technology — that it is vital to accomplishing our goals, and that we are going to work hard to make the best choices for this university,” she said.
Doyle’s work on a vision and plan for technology that will reflect the strategic priorities of the university will be the first order of business.
“Our faculty, students and staff rely on technology for an increasing number of things they do every day and the possibilities for the future are astounding. Advances in network technology, wireless technologies, advances in fiber optics and multi-media communications continue to change the way we work, study and play,” Doyle said. “At the same time, we see an increased need for more serious attention to security, appropriate use and copyright issues.”
Doyle joined the university four years ago as director of Information Technology. During the last year she has also served as interim director of the WSU Libraries and chair of the vice president for student affairs search committee.
