PULLMAN, Wash. — R. Keith Campbell, professor of pharmacy at Washington State University, has achieved Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) status by successfully completing the Certification Examination for Diabetes Educators administered by the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators.
Candidates must meet rigorous educational and professional practice experience requirements to be eligible to take the examination. Achieving the CDE credential demonstrates to patients and employers that the health care professional possesses distinct and specialized knowledge, thereby promoting quality of care for patients with diabetes. Including the results of the October 2000 examination, more than 11,700 diabetes educators hold the CDE credential. NCBDE was established in 1986 to develop and administer a certification program for health care professionals who teach individuals with diabetes how to manage their disease.
Campbell is an international leader in diabetes education and one of the preeminent pharmacy experts in the world in this area. For the past 35 years, he has furthered pharmacists’ involvement in treating patients with diabetes. He has made more than 600 presentations to pharmacy, medical, nursing and patient groups, reaching an estimated 30,000 practitioners, and has trained some 1,500 pharmacy students in diabetes care.
Campbell has served on the board of directors of the American Diabetes Association, American Association of Diabetes Educators, and Diabetes Research and Education Foundation. He also chaired the Medical Advisory Board for the Washington State Diabetes Control Project funded by the Centers for Disease Control.
Among numerous honors, he was named the Outstanding Health Care Educator in the Field of Diabetes in the United States by the American Diabetes Association in 1989 and the Outstanding Pharmacy Administration Professor in the United States by the National Association of Retail Druggists in 1990. Also in 1990, the AADE gave him its Distinguished Service Award.
