PULLMAN, Wash. — A record 200 employers and organizations from 25 states are expected for the 2001 Spring Career Expo of the Palouse. The daylong event will be held at Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum at Washington State University from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Feb. 27.

The free annual event is sponsored by WSU Career Services, the WSU Office of Multicultural Student Services, University of Idaho Cooperative Education and the UI Office of Multicultural Affairs.

Spring Career Expo of the Palouse was formerly known as the Summer Job and Internship Fair. Since a large number of employers will be recruiting graduating students for full-time, permanent employment, the name change more accurately reflects the nature of the event and identifies Expo with its sister event in the fall. There will still be an equally large number of organizations seeking students for internships as well as summer and temporary jobs.

Employers represent a spectrum of opportunities from high-tech fields to summer camps, from the hospitality industry aboard cruise ships to engineers, and from nursing to marketing positions.

“There will truly be something for everyone,” says Dave Haining, WSU Career Services event coordinator. “Organizations that have never recruited here before or have not been to Expo for some time will be looking specifically for our region’s students and graduates to fill their vacancies,” he added.

News of a slowing economy does not appear to be affecting employer attendance at Expo. Just two years ago, Spring Expo drew 90 employers.

“Employers have a strong interest in WSU and UI because of the quality of the programs offered at the two institutions and the excellence of students they have previously recruited,” Haining says. “In addition, Expo has become the largest collegiate career fair in the Pacific Northwest, and recruiters consider a trip to the Palouse a plum assignment.”

Some of the early registrants include Walt Disney World, McCain Foods USA, the Naval Air Warfare Center, Maxim Integrated Products, Phillips and Co. Securities, Teufel Nursery, Hidden Valley Camp, Holland America Line, Dykeman Architects, Promanix, Fluor Hanford, ARAMARK, Hastings Entertainment, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, spokanehasjobs.com, JCPenney, Wolf Education and Research Center, American Classic Voyages, the Gap, Boeing, the Washington State Patrol, Microsoft, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Lake Wenatchee YMCA Camp, the Spokesman Review, KHQ-TV, Safeway, JR Simplot, AMI Semiconductor, the St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center and Princess Tours.

Students who impress recruiters during Expo may be asked to return to Beasley Coliseum on Feb. 28 for an interview. If students wish to have an opportunity for a one-on-one session with a specific recruiter, they must attend Expo on Feb. 27. Mass interviewing the following day is by invitation only; all interviews will take place at Beasley Coliseum.
