Upcoming Auditions Set for Musical

PULLMAN, Wash. — Auditions for a Washington State University production of “The Secret Garden” will be held Dec. 11-14.

Auditions are set for 3-5 p.m. Dec. 11, 7-10 p.m. Dec. 12, and 3-5 p.m. Dec. 13. Callbacks are planned for 7-10 p.m. Dec. 14.

The WSU Opera Workshop and the WSU Theatre Department will present the musical, directed by Julie Ann Wieck, assistant professor of music, in April. Rehearsals will begin Jan. 17. The musical is based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Mary Lennox, an orphaned and lonely little girl, has been sent to live with her embittered Uncle Archibald in Yorkshire. Still grieving over the loss of his beloved wife, Lily, who died ten years earlier, and distraught over the condition of his bedridden son, Archibald casts a dark shadow over the manor until Mary discovers Lily’s secret garden, overrun and neglected. By nursing the garden back to life, Mary also restores life to her grieving uncle and his sick son.

The music was composed by Lucy Simon, sister of Carly Simon, and constituted her Broadway debut. She earned Tony Award and Drama Desk Award nominations for her efforts.

The auditions will require a prepared song, preferably in English, vocalizing to explore range, and a short reading from the script that will be provided at the audition.

To schedule an audition, contact Ann Marie Gooch at the theatre office at 509/335-7447 or at the music office at 509/335-2142. For more information on the production, contact Wieck at 509/335-4331.
