PULLMAN, Wash. — Broadcasting professionals from the Northwest will present workshops and meet with broadcasting students at the Alpha Epsilon Rho Fall Regional Broadcasting Conference Oct. 27- 28 on the Washington State University campus.
Conference events will be held at the Edward R. Murrow Communications Center building on the Pullman campus.
Members of the WSU chapter of AERho, a national honor society for broadcasting students, organized the conference as a way for university students to learn from and network with professionals in broadcasting. They invite broadcasting students interested in the event to register for $40 in Murrow 226 or online at www.cable8.org .
“This is your chance to meet your future boss,” said Kara Rosman, an AERho member and conference organizer. “Here you are getting people from 80 percent of the local stations around us, and in every facet of the broadcasting world.”
Rosman said the conference will allow students to get their questions answered in an informal, friendly manner. The professionals will discuss topics including reporting, sales, and videography during a series of workshops. There also will be a special workshop called “The Real World” featuring WSU alumni who will answer students’ questions about career life outside of college.
Professionals scheduled to attend the conference work in a variety of roles, from Lon Lee, general manager of KHQ, to Scott Armstrong, a news reporter for KREM. The broadcasters will represent organizations including MTV; Northwest Public Radio; KHQ,
KREM, KXLY and North by NorthWest Productions of Spokane; and KNDO of Yakima.
“These are places that students will be working for once they leave,” Rosman said, “and these are the professionals they should be talking to.”
Conference organizers expect more than 100 university students to attend the event. Students from WSU, Central Washington University, the University of Idaho, the University of Oregon and Weber State have already registered.
At 7 p.m. Saturday, there also will be a regional awards ceremony and dinner for members of AERho and the affiliated professional organization, the National Broadcasting Society. AERho members who win regional awards for their productions will compete during the national conference in Los Angeles in spring 2001, Rosman said.
Conference workshops will include:
— “Videography and Photojournalism,” presented by Brian Miller, formerly of MTV.
— “News Reporting,” presented by Glenn Mosely of Northwest Public Radio and Tom Grant, an investigative reporter for KXLY.
— “Film,” presented by Ian Kennedy of North by NorthWest Productions.
— “Management and Sales,” presented by Lon Lee, general manager of KHQ, and Bill Storms, sales director for KHQ.
— “The Real World,” presented by WSU alumni including Scott Armstrong, KHQ news reporter; Katie Baker, KREM news reporter; Megan Powers and Brian Temple of North by NorthWest; and Joe Vithayathil, KNDO news reporter.
