Physical Education Returns as Health and Fitness

PULLMAN,Wash. — Washington State University undergraduates can again become teachers of what was formerly called physical education, through enrollment in the new health and fitness endorsement area at the WSU Department of Kinesiology and Leisure Studies, according to Dennis Warner, interim department chair.

In 1994, the WSU College of Education eliminated the preparation program for physical education teachers, because of changing state rules about physical education in K-12 schools. In Washington’s schools, teaching physical education, which focused on sport and exercise, has been replaced with teaching health and fitness, which focuses on lifelong health and activity.

Students interested in becoming health and fitness teachers should contact the department at 509/335-4593.
