PULLMAN, Wash. — Two concerts are planned in July as part of the
Washington State University Summer Recreation Committee’s “Music from
Around the World” series.
Northwest Folklife Festival performer Kiran Ahluwalia and her trio will present
a 7:30 p.m. program on Tuesday, July 18, at Kimbrough Concert Hall. The
performance will include traditional Indian and Pakistani vocal music.
Ahluwalia specializes in the centuries-old tradition of ghazals, love songs that
are both intensely romantic and passionately spiritual, said Paul Smith, series
coordinator from the WSU School of Music and Theatre Arts. “Her
performances of ghazals not only feature stunning interpretations of the
classical song poetry, but also fluid improvisations in melody and rhythm that
are like those of a master jazz musician.”
Nashville songwriter, singer and guitarist Hugh Moffatt will perform at 7:30
p.m. Thursday, July 20, at Bryan Hall Auditorium. Moffatt has written hits for
Dolly Parton, Ronnie Milsap and Johnny Rodriguez. His songs have been
recorded by Alabama, Jerry Lee Lewis, Merle Haggard and many others.
Among his latest projects has been a collaboration with composer Michael
Ching of Opera Memphis on two successful, one-act operas, “King of the
Clouds” (1993) and “Out of the Rain” (1998). Moffatt recently settled in the
Palouse with his family.
The free concert series is cosponsored by the WSU School of Music and
Theatre Arts.
