PULLMAN, Wash. — New music by both faculty and student composers, as
well as music by guest composer Thomas Benjamin, will be featured during
next week’s New Music Festival at Washington State University.
The festival will begin at 11:10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, with works by student
composers Bryan Werry, Daryl Herbison and Jesse Allison. Performing the
pieces will be Stephanie Washington-Kuffel, Kris Barber, Susan Chan,
Elizabeth Delaney and Hsiao-Ling Lo.
The festival continues with an 8 p.m. program Tuesday of faculty
compositions. Works by Charles Argersinger, Paul Smith, Greg Yasinitsky and
David Jarvis will be presented.
The festival concludes at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, with five featured pieces by
guest composer Thomas Benjamin, currently with Johns Hopkins’ Peabody
Conservatory. Benjamin, a Vermont native, earned degrees from Bard College,
Brandeis, Harvard and the Eastman School of Music. He studied composition
with composers Carlos Surinach, Ernst Krenek, Arthur Berger and Bernard
Rogers.
Performing Benjamin’s pieces will be WSU faculty members Christopher von
Baeyer, Chan, Gerald Berthiaume, Meredith Arksey and Michele Mielke;
graduate students Amy Bland and Jackie Wood; and Solstice Quintet members
Ann Yasinitsky, James Schoepflin, Gary Plowman, Roger Logan and Susan
Hess.
The festival concerts, planned for Bryan Hall Auditorium, are open to the
public without charge.
